COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - You have your Christmas list for Santa tonight, but what about for our state in the new year?

Hands down, the biggest issue people responded to for next year were South Carolina's roads.

On Twitter, when I asked people their South Carolina wish list, Representative Gary Simrill responded saying instead of coal, he wants asphalt in the state's stocking! A road funding bill has top priority when lawmakers return January 12th. It's currently on the list of bills in the Senate for a vote, but it met with stiff opposition in the final days of the 2015 session.

On top of already crumbling roads, October's flood did massive damage statewide, making a weak infrastructure, lawmakers say, even weaker. The question now will be whether or not those same lawmakers who fought gas tax increases last session, are prepared to do the same in January.

"I think now, South Carolina will come together… many of those who were so opposed to a road or infrastructure bill, if you watch those remarks in the media, those remarks have been tempered," York Representative Gary Simrill said.

On top of road funding, the state is looking at a particularly jam packed session. Lawmakers will also tackle the Abbeville School District lawsuit and massive education reforms brought about by the federal Ever Student Succeeds Act.
