COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - One of the most anticipated sections of the Three Rivers Greenway project is getting closer to construction.

The latest section of the Greenway, which runs along a three-mile stretch of the Saluda River, will be built in two phases. This will include areas near the Columbia Canal, Riverbanks Zoo, and extending all the way to I-26 around Lexington Medical Center.

River Alliance CEO Mike Dawson gave an update on the project for Columbia City Council members on Tuesday. Click here for a map of the proposed trail.

"It's always fun to get to the point where you can get it out for bid and get the bids back and then start watching people turn dirt," Dawson said. "Because it's going to be a great project and it's going to provide access to three miles of river that you can't get to. You can sort of see it, but you can't get to it."

Dawson says property rights have been obtained and the work can now move forward through money generated by the Richland County Penny Sales Tax.
