COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - In light of recent terror attacks, police are saying everyone has a hand in enforcing public safety.

Area law enforcement says it can be all too easy to get caught up in the holiday rush for many people. Officials are urging consumers to be alert both inside stores and outside in surrounding parking lots. Thieves have been known to be on the lookout for shoppers who might not be paying attention, making them easy targets for armed robbery and other crimes.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department is stressing to shoppers to be wary of your surroundings at all times.

"If you have a smaller vehicle, try not to park around vehicles that are larger than yours," Sgt. Kevin Lawrence said. "So you can't see around them at night. Pay attention of course to where you park. Sometimes, people will use their key fobs to or an alarm to find out where they park because they forget. Always make a note of where you parked and pay attention to where your vehicle is."

If you see anything concerning or suspicious while you're out, call 911 and report it.
