FLORENCE, SC (WIS) - A 755-pound alligator was caught in Lake Marion and a wildlife expert says it's one of many that size roaming the lake's waters.
"There's some in that lake that are just as big, if not bigger," says Dennis Matherly, President and CEO of Pee Dee Wildlife Control, Inc., who specializes in alligator capture.
The gator measured 13 feet 5 inches and weighed 755 pounds. It was caught Saturday at Stumphole Landing in Lake Marion. It was taken to Claussen Alligator and Deer Processing in Florence.
Matherly says the gator was caught by South Carolina native Zack Derrick, who now lives in Georgia. According to the information posted with the photos on the Claussen Alligator and Deer Processing Facebook page, Derrick used a "rod and reel, snatch hook, and bang stick" to bring in the gator.
Matherly says the entire gator will be processed, from meat, to the skin, to the mounted head.
"Nothing is going to waste," he said.
