COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Law enforcement agencies across the nation are uniting to honor a Houston, Texas deputy who was gunned down last week.

Deputy Darren Goforth was gunned down over the weekend while pumping gas into his patrol car.

Officials believe the suspect, Shannon Miles killed Goforth simply because of his uniform.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department was one department that joined the "Back the Blue" campaign.

Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon calls the tragedy senseless and says the nation should come together to support the men and women who risk their lives everyday.

"There's starting to be a national disrespect for law enforcement fueled by a small group of people who are demeaning our profession," Koon said. "It's important that this silent majority start letting our officers know they're really appreciated for what they do. They have husbands and wives, parents and children and at the end of the day they wanna go home to see their family."

Goforth was laid to rest on Friday afternoon.
