FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Investigators with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say a stray tire caused a tractor-trailer to overturn on Interstate 77 in Fairfield County Wednesday morning.

The tractor-trailer blocked the right southbound lane of Interstate 77 at the 46 mile marker, near the Winnsboro exit for several hours.

The Harris Teeter truck was carrying eggs, produce and grocery products, which spilled onto the highway.

Troopers say a tractor cab heading northbound lost a rear tire, which bounced across the median and was hit by the southbound semi. The southbound truck went off the left side of the road, overturned over a guard rail and went down an embankment.

The crash occurred at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver, identified as Dean Allen Mason, 49,  of Charlotte, had to be removed from the vehicle by emergency crews before taken by helicopter to a hospital in Columbia. Troopers say he was in serious condition on Wednesday.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
