Armed robbery suspect fires at officer, SLED investigating
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia police have requested SC Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate an officer involved shooting incident.
Officers responded to the 2200 block of Santee Avenue for a reported armed robbery shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31.
A female told officers that a man pointed a gun at her and a friend demanding their belongings. The victims complied and were not harmed during the incident.
The suspect left the scene and officers quickly found the suspect in a field near the intersection of Taylor Street and Two Notch Road.
Upon making contact, the suspect fired several shots at a CPD officer, who then returned fire.
The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Ibin Kenta Patterson.
The officer was not harmed during the incident.
After the exchange of gunfire, Patterson ran to the rooftop of a buiding on the 2300 block Taylor Street and refused to surrender.
Additional officers including CPD SWAT Operators were called to the scene to provide tactical assistance. A SLED helicopter was requested to assist and provided an aerial coverage of the suspect who was located on the roof of the business. After more than three hours, the suspect surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.
Patterson was treated and released from the hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg.
Patterson is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and attempted Murder.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative duty with pay pending the outcome of the SLED investigation.
Patterson is being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
