KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Deputies in Kershaw County have arrested 41-year-old Douglas James Barton and charged him with second-degree domestic violence.
Authorities say the Elgin police officer got into an argument with his girlfriend on Monday afternoon. The altercation escalated to a point where the woman tried to call law enforcement. However, Barton took her phone and smashed it with a hammer.
After the phone was broken, the woman tried to leave the home, but Barton held her against her will before assaulting her and throwing her to the ground.
The woman eventually found another phone and tried calling 911, but Barton broke that phone as well. The victim told deputies that Barton also put a pillow over her face to keep her from screaming. The victim also said Barton grabbed her around the throat and struck her in the face.
When the woman was able to escape, she ran to a neighbor's house and called 911 where she waited for law enforcement.
After speaking to the woman and Barton, deputies found Barton was highly intoxicated and took him into custody. Barton was transported to the Kershaw County Detention Center.
According to Kershaw County Jim Matthews, Elgin Police Chief Harold Brown was made aware of the arrest and suspended Barton.
Barton is slated to appear before a Kershaw County magistrate for a bond hearing on Tuesday.
