SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office narcotics division have arrested 18 people during over the last two weeks as part of the culmination of a six-month undercover investigation into illegal drug activity in the county.
The undercover operation led investigators to several parts of Sumter County, with suspects arrested from the Sumter, Dalzell, Rembert and Wedgefield areas. In addition to a substantial amount of cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin and other controlled substances, deputies also seized a number of firearms while serving the arrest warrants.
Arrests were made after undercover officers used several investigative techniques, including making drug purchases in some of the suspects.
Officers from the Richland County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Probation, Parole and Pardon Service assisted the Sumter County Sheriff's Office in the operation.
These arrests come three months after a separate undercover investigation, which was run concurrently by the department, resulted in 16 people being arrested on various drug charges.
"We hope we make it clear to those who might be foolish enough to think about selling illegal drugs in Sumter County that we will not rest until their activities have stopped," Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. "We have been, and will continue to be, vigilant in our efforts against illegal drug activity in our community."
All of the people arrested were transported to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center to await hearings.
