SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Sumter County Sheriff's Office charged a man for his alleged involvement in a home invasion and shooting that left two men seriously wounded earlier this month.
Dawayne Akeem Wells, 26, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, as well as a single count of armed robbery, first-degree burglary and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Shortly after midnight on May 14, Sumter County deputies responded to a reported home invasion in progress at a residence in the 100 block of Brentwood Drive.
Upon arrival, deputies located two wounded men in the front yard of the home.
One of the victims, had been shot multiple times in the neck and back. The victim was transported to a Columbia-area hospital, where he remains in intensive care. The other shooting victim was transported to a Sumter-area hospital, where he was treated and later released.
Officers discovered signs of both a struggle and gunplay inside and outside the home, while investigating the crime scene. Investigators were later informed that the victims were robbed of jewelry and money.
Investigators say a witness identified Wells as a perpetrator in the incident.
Wells is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, awaiting a bond hearing.
The investigation into the incident continues, additional charges and arrests are possible.
