COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Two men were arrested early Saturday morning after a Columbia police officer saw their car run a red light and hit another car in downtown Columbia.
Police say a North Region officer was traveling to headquarters when the incident happened shortly after 6 a.m. in the 1100 block of Elmwood Avenue.
The driver, 29-year-old Lawrence Green, allegedly ran away from the scene just after the collision.
According to Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons, police chased Green and yelled for him to stop several times, but he did not comply. Green was arrested minutes later at 1003 Elmwood Avenue.
The arresting officer says he noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Green. The officer also says Green lied about his identity.
Green is charged with DUI, Open Container in a Moving Vehicle, Disregarding a Traffic Control Device, Hit and Run, Failure to Stop on Police Command, Hindering an Officer and Giving False Information to Law Enforcement Officer.
Officers also arrested a second person who was in the car with Green. Police say Brandon Scott Carter, 29, also ran from the scene of the wreck.
He was arrested with the assistance of a K9 team at the intersection of Jefferson and Sumter Streets.
Carter was charged with drunkenness, simple possession of marijuana, and open container in a moving vehicle.
Green and Carter were transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Timmons says the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
