COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Law enforcement officers from across South Carolina are gathering to honor their colleagues who died last year.

The event at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia on Wednesday honors both active and retired officers who have passed away.

This year, three officers who died in the line of duty are being remembered.

They include a Charleston County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed in September responding to a disturbance near Charleston as well as a Summerville police officer who died after suffering a heart attack while conducting a traffic stop in October.

The third officer was a Clarendon County Sheriff's investigator who died in a November traffic accident returning from a meeting with other law officers about an auto theft investigation.
