MANNING, SC (WIS) - The community paused Saturday to remember the many men and women in law enforcement who have died in service to Clarendon County over the years.

Hundreds attended a memorial service on Mill Street where a wall bears the names of every officer who has been killed in the line of duty. That includes Investigator Holmes N. Smith Jr. of the Clarendon County Sheriffs Office, who died in a car accident last November. Smith was driving back from Sumter after meeting with SLED agents on an auto theft investigation.

''He was my husband...he was my best friend,'' said his wife Tonia Mallett Smith. ''We loved each other.''

Saturday afternoons service was also well attended by members of the Manning Police Department as well as the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Holmes Smith, who was a 19 year veteran in law enforcement, is also survived by his three sons Holmes Jr., Joshua and Isaac Smith.
