Lott on teen's fatal shooting: `We felt like it was gang-related from the beginning`

RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a drive-by shooting last month in that claimed the life of a teenager was the result of gang retaliation.
Nathan later died at the hospital.
Investigators released few details at the time of the shooting but Wednesday, Lott admitted the shooting was the result of gang retaliation.
"It was an accumulation of incidents that occurred previously," Lott said.
One of those incidents was a shooting at Gonzales Gardens in Columbia on February 17th. Lott says the victim in the shooting and three associates went to Windy Drive the following weekend and shot Nathan, spraying houses with bullets.
Xavier Brannon, the victim from the Gonzales Gardens shooting, Alvin Anderson, Tyshon Anderson and Varn Smith are charged with murder.
"The community helped us immensely," Lott said. "We felt like it was gang-related from the beginning. This shooting was a pure retaliation from a gang involvement."
"Gangs are gonna end you up in one of two places," he said. "You're gonna end up in a cemetery or you're gonna end up in prison."
