SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Terry Kent Smith has been arrested by the Sumter Police Department and charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult.
According to Sumter Police spokesperson Tonyia McGirt, a 56-year-old woman was brought to Palmetto Health Richland on Feb. 24 after she suffered a head injury. The woman, who was unable to care for herself, told officials that the injury occurred when Smith dropped her as he attempted to carry her to the bathroom.
The woman later died of natural causes. An autopsy determined the woman's head injury did not factor into her death.
However, police say her hygiene and living situation were in bad condition, and arrested Smith for abuse of a vulnerable adult.
Smith, who was reportedly the woman's live-in boyfriend and caregiver, was located and taken into custody on Monday.
No bond has currently been issued for Smith.
