COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that displaced 13 people early Monday morning.

The fire started just after 2 a.m. in a building at the apartment complex at 1401 Cactus Avenue.  Firefighters had to wake up people in the surrounding homes to get them out.

"The primary apartment which is on the end, 1401 has heavy fire, smoke, water damage," said Columbia Fire Department spokesperson Brick Lewis. "That's where the primary apartment is. After that, the smoke and water damage would continue down to the other two apartments. Right now we're just assessing how much damage is in those if any in the 3rd one."

Five adults and eight children were displaced. One apartment was destroyed and two apartments suffered minor damage. The American Red Cross is helping the three families who lost their homes.
