SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety and Sumter School District are continuing to investigate a collision between a tractor-trailer and school bus that sent several people to the hospital Thursday evening.
The crash happened around 5 p.m. on U.S. Highway 521 near Rembert.
School district spokeswoman Shelly Galloway said the bus overturned after being rear-ended by the tractor-trailer.
Three Crestwood High School students, the driver and his two grandchildren were on the bus at the time of the collision, Galloway said.
All six were assessed at the scene and transported by EMS to an area hospital as a precautionary measure. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also hospitalized. Galloway said no major injuries were reported.
The driver's grandchildren, who attend Oakland Primary School, remained on the bus after his first route, which is not standard procedure. The district superintendent will address that issue Friday morning, Galloway said.
