COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Authorities have located the man wanted in connection with trying to run over a Midlands Technical College police officer on Tuesday night.

The State Law Enforcement Division said George Wright, Jr., 40, was driving a green Dodge Neon in "suspicious manner" in the parking lot of Midland Tech's Beltline campus.

SLED investigators said when the officer tried to make contact with Wright Jr., he accelerated the vehicle towards the officer almost hitting him. The vehicle left the scene in an unknown direction.

Students walk to and from class, many with no knowledge of what happened Tuesday night.

"I had absolutely no idea," said student Cole Fortson. "Wow."

Midlands Tech spokesman Todd Gavin said someone tried to run over an officer and the officer then shot at the driver several times.

"He was just doing his job," student Dennis Jackson said. "Why would you run the officer over? Doesn't make any sense at all."

Many students had no idea because no emergency alert was sent out.

"Yes it makes me nervous," student Heather Friedrich said. "I'm like a hypochondriac, to be honest. This stuff freaks me out."

Students said they would have liked an alert to let them know what was doing on.

"You'd want to know about stuff like that," student Cole Fortson said. "An email, something. We have alerts and stuff. We didn't get any of that I'm pretty sure."

Gavin said no alert was issued because there was no immediate threat to students since the driver left campus.

"I feel like Midlands does a pretty good job, I mean, we have the emergency poles and stuff," Friedrich said.

We did ask if there was any surveillance video of the incident but we're told even though there are several cameras in the area, there is no video of what reportedly happened.

Gavin declined our requests for an on-camera interview Wednesday.
