COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Black Friday shoppers were blacked out at one Midlands-area mall.

The power went out at Columbiana Centre at about 12:40 am. The power outage affected lights in the parking lot, the lights in the hallways and lights in all the stores except for Belk. All the stores involved in the blackout had to close because they couldn't make any transactions.

"The customers were shopping, the lights had went out," said Jasmin Daniels. "So what we did was tell them they would have to exit the store because the system was down."

Shoppers used the flashlight apps on their phones to find their way around. Mall security and Columbia Police helped people get safely out of the building.

"We were just shopping and the lights just went out. This is just bizarre," said Sakina Bailey. "Everybody is walking around with their phones and their lights on trying to find out where to go. It's just crazy."

Once the backup generators activated, the emergency lights turned on. It took about an hour for SCE&G crews to restore power.

"It was pretty awesome," one shopper said. "I mean I enjoyed it and it was the highlight of my night. It was a very memorable moment too."

SCE&G said the cause of the outage was due to a bad cable.
