COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - For the final time, hundreds of runners took off at Columbia Metropolitan Airport Saturday.
The annual 'Runway 5-K Run' had more than a thousand people run 3 miles of the airport's runway.
This year all proceeds went to benefit the South Carolina USO.
Saturday was the final run because the airport says it causes too much strain on the staff.
Many of runners said they planned to savor every minute.
"Sad there's not going to be future runs, but I'm just really thankful," said Army veteran James McMillan. "That you know today on my birthday I get to come out and enjoy you know the local community and share the experience with everybody."
Organizers say over the course of its five years, the "Runway Run" has helped raise close to $30,000.
