SCDOT employee accused of attempting to sell traffic safety equipment

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - An employee of the South Carolina Department of Transportation is charged with breach of trust after SLED officers say he attempted to sell traffic safety equipment.

Joe Edward Butler of Elgin was arrested November 7 . According to the arrest warrant, he is accused of selling a traffic signal cabinet belonging to SCDOT to a cooperating witness for $7,000. The warrant says Butler did not have the authority to sell the traffic signal.

The traffic signal cabinet was valued at $10,000. He was charged with breach of trust with fraudulent intent over $10,000.

The warrant says Butler provided a verbal confession.
