ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An Orangeburg man has been charged with murder after an argument over the payment of a light bill, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said George William Hughes, 69, called law enforcement to a home off Cobb Drive at 10 a.m. on Thursday after he said he shot someone.

When deputies arrived on the scene, Hughes told investigators he and the victim were arguing over the payment of a light bill that the victim skipped out on when he moved from a home owned by Hughes.

Hughes told deputies the victim pulled a knife on him, threatening his life.

Deputies say Hughes shot the victim up to four times killing him.

Hughes was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
