Hopkins house fire victim's identity released

One person was killed in a house fire in Hopkins, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

Mary Sumter, 75, died from complications of the fire, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

According to Columbia Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis, firefighters arrived at the Pine Borrough Road home around 4:30 p.m. and found the residence engulfed in flames and heavy smoke pouring from it.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins said once firefighters finally made entry they found one body.

Another victim was taken to the hospital with injuries. Their condition was not immediately available.

This is the second fatal fire in Richland County this week.

Just like this one, Jenkins said they don't yet know the cause of the other one either.

"Its' a tragedy that it happened," Jenkins said. "We had family on the scene."
