LANCASTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A former Lancaster County sheriff found himself in trouble with the law after SLED charged him with one count of breach of trust with fraudulent intent.

John Walter Cauthen, 58, could spend up to 30 days in jail or pay a fine of up to $1,000 on the charge.

According to SLED investigators, officers with the Rock Hill Police Department executed a search warrant at Cauthen's home for an "unrelated matter" and located a .40-caliber Glock and a laptop computer purchased by the sheriff's department.

Cauthen, who was the county sheriff from 1997 to 2008, did not have permission to keep those items and should not have kept them past Dec. 31, 2008, according to SLED agents.

Agents booked Cauthen at the Lancaster County Detention Center.
