Lexington teacher charged with DUI, child endangerment after arriving at work

LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A Lexington School District One teacher was arrested on Monday morning after arriving at work under the influence of alcohol.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Jan Curtis was followed to the parking lot of Red Bank Elementary by a member of the Cayce Police Department. According to authorities, Curtis was weaving across the center line and off the right side of the roadway continuously before arriving at the school.

Curtis told authorities she had two glasses of wine on Sunday night and went to bed at 10 p.m. After being approached by the Cayce Police officer and Lexington County deputy, Curtis was given sobriety tests by South Carolina DPS. After failing the tests, Curtis was arrested. Authorities also say Curtis picked up a child to take to school. The custody of the child, however was later released to the school by a Lexington County deputy on scene.

Curtis was later charged with driving under the influence and child endangerment.

According to a spokesperson for the district, Curtis will likely be placed on leave pending inquiry.
