With Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks taking the court for their first practice, there was one notable player who was not taking part in the action.

WIS has learned the 6-4 standout Alaina Coates was suspended for violating team rules. According to Staley, the sophomore standout from Irmo will not practice until Saturday.

Coates was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2014 by coaches and Newcomer of the Year by the Associated Press. The former McDonald's and Parade All-American was the only freshman ranked among the SEC's top 25 in scoring (12.2 points per game) and rebounding (8.4 per game).

Coates was also selected as the conference's Co-6th Player of the Year by the league's coaches, SEC Freshman of the Week five times, and earned a spot on the 2014 NCAA Tournament All-Region Team among other accolades.

Freshman guard Kaydra Duckett also missed practice today. The freshman guard, according to officials, missed a team conditioning benchmark.

The Gamecocks will open the 2014-15 campaign at home against South California on November 15th.
