Contest to determine name for Columbia minor league team
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Baseball fans in the Columbia area have a chance to be a part of naming the Minor League Baseball team that will play at the new ballpark on Bull Street.
The owner who plans to bring the team to Columbia announced Monday the community will be involved in selecting a name for the team. Fans can make their team name suggestions online by clicking here. A short explanation of the name should be included in the entry.
The winner will throw out the first pitch at the team's first game and win a team jersey, hat, and tickets to the ballpark's opening night.
"Columbia's team needs an identity that is uniquely Columbia, and we're counting on the community to help us identify the moniker that will resonate through the Midlands," said a news release.
Construction is scheduled to begin in October on a ballpark at the former site of the Bull Street State Mental Health Asylum. It is expected to be completed in time for the team to open the 2016 season. The City of Columbia is paying as much as $35 million through Special Obligation Bonds to build the ballpark.
Fans have until October 15th to submit their team name suggestions. The winning name, along with the team logo and colors will be unveiled in spring of 2015.
