SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A man suspected of nearly striking two officers before leading police on a chase and then fleeing on foot is now in custody.

Shaquille Morique Leneau, 22, was captured earlier today in the county at a residence on East Patricia Drive. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Marshal's Offices assisted in the arrest.

Leneau is charged with two counts of attempted murder and is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center. Possible charges by the county are pending.

Police were responding to a reported break-in after 10 p.m. Aug. 26 at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Harvin Street, when they spotted a suspicious vehicle near the church on Brand Street.

Officers were able to head off the vehicle before the driver backed into one patrol car as the officer was standing inside its door. The suspect then accelerated forward toward another officer who had to jump out of the way.

A chase down Brand Street ended with the vehicle being found parked in front of a home on Red & White Street. Police were later able to identify Leneau as the driver.

The case remains under investigation.
