AIKEN COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Newberry County Coroner's Office has scheduled an autopsy on Thursday for the 3-year-old girl who died after being struck by a golf cart in the parking lot of an Aiken hospital.

The girl, who has only been identified as Kirsten from Graniteville, was struck by the cart around 1:35 p.m. on Tuesday at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

When officers from the Aiken Department of Public Safety arrived, they said they found that a golf cart being driven by a security guard hit the child. Aiken Coroner Tim Carlton says the child's family was leaving the hospital at the time of the accident.

The child immediately received medical attention at the hospital, but they later transported her to Georgia Regents University where she passed away around 6:52 a.m.

The Aiken County Coroner's Office says the child, who has only been identified by the hospital as Kirsten, passed away Tuesday at around 6:52 a.m. Wednesday.

Aiken Regional Medical Center released a statement about the incident, saying they were "devastated by the accident."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this little girl and her family," said the statement. "The investigation is in the hands of Aiken Public Safety and they will be providing you with more details as they become available."

An accident reconstruction team from Aiken DPS was on scene after the collision and is continuing to investigate.

"We have been in contact with the family and at this time we are respecting the needs and their desire for some space," said Lt. J.D. Mahoney with Aiken DPS. "We are here for them anytime they need to reach out to us and we will do our best to keep them informed and answer any questions that they may have for us."

Aiken DPS officials say there is no timetable for the completion of accident reconstruction or submission of their final report on the matter.
