SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The Sumter County Coroner has identified the man who died in a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Dr. Edmund McDonald, 59, died early Wednesday morning. He was a dentist in Sumter for more than 20 years.

The Sumter County Fire Department says crews were called to the home in the Runnymede subdivision off Highway 15 north of Sumter at about 12:15 a.m. When firefighters arrived about seven minutes later, the house was engulfed in flames.

"It was a good hour into the process getting everything completely under control before I could get in and do a little bit more of removing overhaul and stuff of that nature," Sumter County fire captain Michael Ward said.

McDonald, who was disabled, was unable to escape a lower level family room, Ward said. McDonald's wife managed to get out.

Investigators say the fire started in the kitchen, but they are still working to determine what started the fire.
