COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Friends and colleagues at the University of South Carolina are mourning the passing of a beloved teacher and respected religious scholar.
Dr. Hal French died Thursday after a short illness.
He'd been a member of the Religious Studies faculty at USC since 1972.
Dr. French retired as Department Chair in 1995, but continued to write and teach on campus and around the world.
He also volunteered in disaster relief efforts in India and in Mississippi following Hurricane Katrina.
On Friday, a faculty spokesman said thousands of students were inspired and changed by Dr. French's wisdom, energy, humor, devotion to diversity and inclusion and "deep concern for the well-being of others."
