SUMTER COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center correctional officer has been arrested and charged with distribution of marijuana following a drug sting in Sumter County.
Wesley Dale Gardner of Rembert was arrested at a gas station in Dalzell late Saturday night, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Department.
According to a sheriff's department incident report, the Sumter County Drug Unit utilized a confidential informant who first met Gardner while she was being booked as an inmate.
Deputies said the 29-year-old told the inmate he "would take care of her" during her "dress down." Gardner did not leave the room during the "dress down." As she undressed, he asked her for her phone number, the report stated.
The woman contacted investigators with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, which started an investigation using her as an informant.
The report says Gardner, who told her his name was "Marcus," contacted her to arrange a meeting, to which she agreed. At the request of investigators, the woman asked Gardner if he could acquire marijuana, which he responded that he could and he would give it to her when they met.
A meeting was arranged at a gas station on Camden Highway in Dalzell Saturday. Officers provided the woman with surveillance equipment and accompanied her to the meeting spot for surveillance.
The report says as Gardner gave the marijuana to the woman as she sat in her car, officers arrested him. During his arrest he was identified as a corrections officer and taken to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
