Man charged with felony DUI after passenger killed in wreck

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia Police have charged a man with felony DUI after an early-morning crash that killed a passenger in his vehicle.

Police accuse 19-year-old Benjamin Hampton of speeding on Veterans Road in Southeast Columbia just before 4 a.m. Friday when his vehicle crashed into a tree. Hampton is accused of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

A passenger in Hampton's vehicle, 19-year-old Davon Bryant of Columbia, died at the scene, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Police say Hampton and a 17-year-old passenger in the rear seat were removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital, where they are in critical condition. The 17-year-old victim's name has not been released.

Columbia Police are investigating the crash.
