Sheriff says suspect dropped bottles of stolen booze while trying to flee
LEXINGTON, SC (WIS) - The Lexington County Sheriff says a man wanted for burglary dropped several bottles of stolen liquor while trying to run away from deputies.
Deputies arrested 19-year-old Gavin Wyatt James of Lexington Monday on two counts of burglary. He is awaiting a bond hearing at the Lexington County Detention Center.
Sheriff James Metts says James was arrested just after 3 a.m. Monday after a homeowner on Farmdale Drive near Lexington reported James forced open a side door of the house and stole a purse and cell phone. The homeowner told investigators he saw James run into the woods near his home.
James is accused of breaking into a home on Country Oak Road minutes later and stealing five bottles of liquor and wine. As he was running away from the home, deputies saw James drop several of the bottles. Sheriff Metts says James did not follow deputies' orders to stop.
With the help of K-9 officers, deputies caught up with James as Metts says he attempted to jump a fence near the Farmdale Drive crime scene.
Metts says deputies searched the woods and recovered several items that had been stolen from both homes. Deputies also found several tablets of Xanax, for which James did not have a prescription.
