An early morning fire at a manufacturing plant in Sumter is under investigation.

Sumter Fire Department Captain Joey Duggan says they were called out to the Apex Tool Group's Sumter plant around 1 a.m. Friday.

According to Capt. Duggan, heavy fire was coming from the roof when crews arrived on scene and it took about two hours to get things under control.

The most difficult thing, according to Capt. Duggan, was trying to keep water from spilling into the hot vats the company uses to melt metal.

The flames were extinguished around 4:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported.

Investigators are now trying to determine what caused the fire and how much damage was done.
