COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A big party over the weekend on the outskirts of Bishopville on Highway 15 in Lee County ended with gunfire and left one man dead.

It was supposed to be a birthday party for Cypress Hill --  a nearby community -- but as the Saturday night celebration wound down, violence cropped up.

"They had about 250-300 people there," said Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon.

Simon says Timothy Kennedy, a 23-year old with a clean record, was in that crowd.

Simon says at around 2:30, the manager ejected Kennedy for causing problems, but not before Kennedy said he'd be back.

"He said he was going to come back with a gun and turn the place out," said Simon.

The manager called 911, but before deputies could respond, they say Kennedy made good on his promise. They say he came to a parking lot across the street, got a gun out of his car and started shooting back toward the club. Two private security guards working the door fired back, striking Kennedy in the chest.

Kennedy would be dead a short time later. Simon says the two guards were hired from Columbia-based GlobalNet Protective Solutions, a security company in good standing with SLED.

"Thank God nobody else got hurt," said Simon. "It could've been a much more serious incident."

SLED and the Bishopville Police are assisting Lee County as they work to learn more.

"The investigation is ongoing and we're still trying to figure out what led it to the point that he got that irate that he wanted to go back and retrieve a weapon," said Simon.
