BISHOPVILLE, SC (WIS) - The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting at a Bishopville birthday party early Sunday morning.

Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon said the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday at the Davis Social Club in the 500 block of South Main Street.

Simon said the club owner called police and said a young man was going to get a weapon and "close the club down."

The man, who has been identified as 23-year-old Timothy Stephen Kennedy, of Lamar, left to get a handgun and proceeded to fire shots at the building from across the street, Simon said.

Kennedy was among 200 to 300 patrons at a birthday party the club hosted.

Two security guards in the front of the building were in the line of fire when Kennedy started shooting, Simon said.

One of the security guards returned fire and shot and killed Kennedy.

No other injuries were reported, Simon said.

SLED crime scene investigators and the Bishopville police are assisting the Lee County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.

Simon said they still conducting interviews and a motive has not been determined.
