Columbia Marathon will not happen in 2014

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia's only marathon will not take place in 2014, according to the race director.

Dan Hartley says the Columbia Marathon, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2014, has been canceled.

"It will not take place for 2014," said Hartley. "I'm hopeful that someone will be taking it over to reestablish for 2015."

The event, which was started in 2012 after a 10-year marathon absence in the capital city, included a marathon, a half-marathon, 5K and kid's fun run.

Possible trouble for the race became apparent in the days following the 2013 event when several age-group winners began to complain that they did not receive their promised awards.

Hartley responded on the race's Facebook page saying he did not have enough money to purchase the awards.

The 2012 race drew runners from 46 states and 5 countries and event attracted at least 2,000 people to downtown Columbia, according to some estimates.
