Driver charged after crash involving school bus near Lugoff-Elgin H.S.

LUGOFF, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a Hartsville woman has been charged after a collision between a school bus and two other vehicles near Lugoff-Elgin High School.

Trooper Billy Elder says 24-year-old Amber N. Huff is charged with driving too fast for conditions in connection to the wreck on Thursday.

Lugoff Fire Chief Dennis Ray says the incident happened on U.S. 1 in front of the Pine Mark Subdivision, which is just west of the school.

A spokesperson for the Kershaw County School District says no students were seriously injured and the driver is okay. Mary-Anne Byrd says five students were taken to an area hospital for precautionary reasons.

The bus was taking 54 students home from Wateree Elementary School. Another bus was dispatched to pick the students up and continue the trip home.

Investigators say that Huff's vehicle hit the back of a stopped van, which then slammed into the back of the stopped school bus.

Ray says three people from the other vehicles have been transported to hospitals. He says their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.

Highway Patrol troopers had the road closed during the investigation, but have since reopened the highway.
