Security guard charged with killing woman
ANDERSON, SC (WYFF) - An Upstate security guard who says he shot a woman in self-defense after an altercation at a nightclub turned himself in to face charges Thursday afternoon.
Joey Ryan Johnson Jr. is charged with voluntary manslaughter and aggravated assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Anderson County deputies were called to a wreck early Saturday on the Highway 28 bypass at Market Street where they learned two people in the truck and had been shot and one had died.
The coroner said the driver, India Cynthia Lomax, 21, was shot in the torso from behind and died at the scene.
Deputies said Lomax and her passenger, Willis Reginald Donald, 33, were shot at a gas station next to Marvon's nightclub. Donald was shot in the arm.
Joey Ryan Johnson Jr., a private security guard at Marvon's, told deputies there was an altercation at the club and there were claims that someone had a weapon.
SLED said Johnson works for Black Ops Protective Services.
Johnson told deputies he was trying to disperse a crowd from the club's parking lot and the gas station parking lot next to it after the altercation. He told deputies he ordered the driver of a truck, later identified as Lomax, to stop as she was driving out of the parking lot, but instead she veered in his direction.
Johnson claimed that as the truck was moving, Donald reached over, grabbed the steering wheel and aimed the vehicle in his direction. Johnson said he fired at the truck in self defense.
The bullet-ridden truck came to rest in an awkward position leaning against a utility pole.
On Monday, investigators said Lomax's truck had 11 bullets holes and it appears Johnson was the only person who fired a weapon in the parking lot.
Investigators said they determined that the truck driven by Lomax has eleven bullet holes in it in the sides and rear. Investigators have not been able to confirm how many shots were fired.
Johnson's attorney said that her client fired in self-defense and will fight the charges.
