Deputies: Victim in fatal shooting was holding a 3-year-old child

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - An investigation is underway late Wednesday evening following a fatal shooting at the Deer Park Apartments on Firelane Road.

Sgt. Curtis Wilson, spokesperson for the Richland County Sheriff's Department, says gunfire broke out between two groups in the area and it appears a bystander was shot in the upper body.

That bystander was identified by the Richland County Coroner as 25-year-old Howard J. Nemley.

Wilson says the victim was holding his 3-year-old child at the time of the shooting.

"[I was] checking his pulse, his pulse was fading," said a witness who did not want to be identified. "I was out there with him. At the time he was holding his daughter in his hand."

The child was not wounded.

The victim, however, was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

There is no word on the victim's identity, and deputies have not arrested any suspects.
