COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - University of South Carolina officials have begun to warn at least 6,300 hundred students about the potential of their sensitive information being compromised.
According to the university, someone stole a laptop from a locked room in the Department of Physics and Astronomy back in April.
That laptop included files with the names, e-mail addresses, and Social Security numbers of those students.
Officials also say they have no evidence to suggest the information has been accessed.
The university is mailing letters to the students who have been potentially affected, warning them to take measures to protect themselves against identity theft.
