NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC (WIS) - An evacuation order has been lifted after a truck carrying ammonium nitrate caught on fire in Chappells, according to Newberry County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say S.C. Highway 39 and Rose Bud Lane in the Chappells section of Newberry County remains blocked and a cleanup effort is underway to remove the spilled ammonium nitrate.

The road will be closed until further notice.

A mechanical issue on the tanker truck resulted in a fire at the intersection of S.C. Highway 39 and Rose Bud Lane in the Chappells section of Newberry County Monday night.

Deputies say the truck was carrying granulated ammonium nitrate, so residents within one mile of the intersection were evacuated from their homes.
