Man wanted for stealing $83K in jewelry, cash turns himself in

FOREST ACRES, SC (WIS) - A man police said stole nearly $83,000 in jewelry and cash from a Forest Acres jewelry store has turned himself in to authorities.

Police said 23-year-old Robert Deron Gaines showed up at the Forest Acres Police Department on Saturday after seeing himself on television.

He was wanted on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

Investigators say at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13th, Gaines entered Michaels Jewelry in Trenholm Plaza on Forest Drive armed with a pistol and demanded employees give him jewelry from the display cases.  According to police, Gaines held the store owner and several others against their will during the robbery.

In addition to the jewelry, police say Gaines stole a wallet containing credit cards and $700 in cash. Police have recovered some of the jewelry that was stolen.

He was denied bond and reminds in custody at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
