(Athens, Greece-AP) Aug. 19, 2004 - The United States smashed swimming's oldest record on Wednesday in Athens.

Natalie Coughlin, Carly Piper, Dana Vollmer and Kaitlin Sandeno won the 800-meter freestyle relay in a world-record time of 7:53.42.

They cut more than two seconds off a record set by a former East German team 17 years ago.

China earned silver and Germany took the bronze.

The United States also won the event in 1996 and 2000, the only other times it's been contested in the Olympics.
