(Athens, Greece-AP) August 14,2 004 - The US swim team earned the first five American medals at the Athens Olympics: one gold, three silver, and one bronze.

American swimmer Michael Phelps won't be able to win eight gold medals in Athens after all. He was added to a relay team today at the expense of another swimmer, but the team had to settle for a bronze. That means the best that Phelps can do in Athens is seven gold medals, tying the record set by Mark Spitz.

Phelps broke his own world record with a winning time of four minutes, 8.26 seconds in the 400-meter individual medley final, winning the gold. Fellow American Erik Vendt took the silver.

Jenny Thompson tied the Olympic record for most career swimming medals with her eleventh, a silver that came when she teamed with Kara Lynn Joyce, Natalie Coughlin and Amanda Weir for an American record time in the 400 freestyle relay. Australia won in world record time.

Kaitlin Sandeno won silver in the women's 400-meter individual medley.

The US picked up a bronze medal when Klete Keller, the bronze medalist four years ago, finished third behind Australian stars Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett in the men's 400 freestyle. Thorpe also won that event in Sydney.
