CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser will take over as the county's sheriff for the time being while suspended Sheriff Sam Parker faces several indictments from the State Grand Jury.

Kiser says he was informed on Wednesday he would take over as acting sheriff by Gov. Nikki Haley's office. He will serve in that capacity until further notice.

South Carolina law says the coroner in any county automatically takes over as acting sheriff the moment the governor suspends an elected sheriff as a result of an indictment.

"Please know that the men and women of the Sheriff's Office are here to continue to serve and protect the citizens of Chesterfield County. I will do everything I can to assure that all matters concerning the Sheriff's Office are handled in a professional and respectful manner," said Kiser in a statement.

Meanwhile, Parker was indicted by the State Grand Jury Tuesday night. The six indictments cover four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates.
