Coroner identifies man killed in fiery crash on 277

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Authorities have released the identity of a man who died in a single-vehicle crash on South Carolina Highway 277 Tuesday morning near downtown Columbia.

The incident happened in the inbound lanes between Harden Street Extension and Sunset Drive near Palmetto Health Richland Hospital around 10:30.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Gary A. Raszewski, 59, of Columbia, was the driver and only occupant of an SUV that left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier.

Columbia Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Timmons said civilians and rescue personnel attempted to pull Raszewski out of the car, but were unsuccessful due to the fire.

Watts said Raszewski died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision.

Portions of the highway were closed in both directions for a few hours after the crash.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the collision.
