COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Whether they're walking home alone from school, trick-or-treating with friends, or shopping in a busy mall, your child could be a thief or kidnapper's target.
And the odds of this happening increase during the holidays. The Columbia Police Department is hosting a free self-defense class for kids and their parents.
"The purpose of this class is to teach awareness safety and ways they can be safe from a would be attacker," said Columbia Police officer Lance Adams.
The class is called ESCAPE, which stands for Educating Students and Children on Anti Abduction Protection and Essentials.
"You are armed with techniques to fight off an attacker and draw attention to your self so people can come to help you and escape," said Adams.
And parents, get ready for an eye opening experience.
"The parent will sit and see how their child would react if a situation where someone tries to accost them , assault or grab them," he said.
The interactive class for parents and kids could mean the difference between life or death.
