COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The coroner has identified a Columbia man who was hit and killed by a dump truck while he was operating a motorized wheelchair in Five Points Monday morning.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said 67-year-old George Jackson of Read Street was in a wheelchair at the intersection of Harden Street and Greene Street just after 10:15 a.m. when he was hit by a commercial dump truck.

Watts said the driver of the truck apparently did not see Jackson as he made a right turn onto Greene Street from Harden.

Jackson was rushed to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital by EMS where he was pronounced dead.

Jackson died from injuries received in the collision, the coroner said.

The truck involved in the crash is registered to PASCON, LLC, a solid waster hauling company located in Lexington.

Investigators will be reviewing surveillance video of the incident to get a better idea of what happened.

No charges have been filed.
